how to know the wildflowers

My heart has melted. Tonight as I was thumbing through one of my coveted antique books for typography inspiration, I found the most amazing little treasures within its pages. Notes of wildflower sightings from the summer of 1902 & 3. AND an actual columbine flower that had been carefully pressed between the pages of its correct spread. This flower was picked, recorded, and placed in this book over 100 years ago. Such a treasure. (Gulp)

I came across these photos of my mother from the mid 1960's and they look like something out of a Kate Spade photoshoot. As I look closely at the details, I am in awe of way they are dressed and the carefulness in each of the settings. And it makes me nostalgic for a period of fashion I never knew. How many of us have posed on the sofa with a friend and her baby -- does it look like this? (sigh)

The concept reminds me of the ArtSwap events I've attended and helped organize in the past. Each creator brings a piece of art; the art was then put on display. Drinks, food and conversation were had, and then each artist went home with a new piece of art. Creativity was stirred and everyone always had a really great time. The Artswap concept was started by my dear friend and amazing photographer, Cheryl Zibisky. (I think we're long overdue for the next one; time to start planning!)

The Perennial Plate

I stumbled upon the Perennial Plate site/project/movement over the weekend, and have become mildly obsessed; I am currently working my way through all of Season One's 52 episodes. Daniel and Mirra are taking the show on the road in Season Two, traveling across the US beginning May 9th. The Perennial Plate mini-documentaries are thoughtful and beautifully produced. They do a great job of creating awareness for the local food movement. I'm hooked! Follow them, and you will too.

so much inspiration

I had the privilege of attending the 2011 Armory Show in New York City yesterday. And it was truly a feast for my eyes and my soul. I was honored be in the presence of so much amazing work in one place. Below is just a small sampling of the inspiration found at Piers 92 & 94. Also, the scribble-sheet annotating my favorite artists; it made perfect sense yesterday... today, not so much(!)

Silvie and I had some fun recently stamping the cross section of a celery stalk. Can you guess who made each of the patterns? (Hint): I should follow my 2 year old daughter's lead in breaking the grid. I was so pleased to see how beautifully the celery printed. Keep an eye out for more veggie prints!
